NAS – Video Card

Estimated read time 1 min read

On my NAS system, I have Plex installed and running. For transcoding video to be streamed. The graphics card is a Nvidia 730GT. It has worked well throughout the years. After doing a bit of research and finding out PLEX works best with Intel Quicksync for transcoding video over Nvidia. It made me consider that it was time for an upgrade?

After having great success with using the new Intel graphic cards for my home network video recording system. (BlueIris). I figured why not replicate it on my NAS system. I was lucky in two aspects. One, my NAS runs on Linux. 2. Linux just released the updated kernel that has drivers for the latest Intel graphic cards.

I took a gamble and purchased another Intel Arc 750 from newegg. Installed it on my system and has been working great so far for hardware transcoding instead of using the CPU for that task. In my research I found not many have tried but were curious if the idea worked. I beta tested and seems to be working well. It was a nice size, not too much on the power draw compared to AMD or Nvidia and price was on point.
