OpenMediaVault – OMV

After upgrading my NAS hardware. I was running into many issues with the re-installation of Truenas.  Truenas is a very well made operating system but there have been changes since I first setup my initial Truenas system (formerly Freenas).  I did not use my backup file of the settings from the original setup of my system.  I wanted to start from scratch and really take my time to properly set this system up.  I kept on getting into permission issues.  Secondly was the setup of PLEX within Truenas as a plugin.  The plugins are outdated and If I wanted to keep Plex up to date I would need to constantly have to do work arounds.  I started to think if this was a great time to change software and direction.

I had installed openmediavault years ago on my previous system.  It did not work well together to say the least.  Settings would not revert and had to do a system wipe to get anything working.  I figured the software may have matured and give it a second shot.  I installed it and followed a few YouTube tutorials and got the software installed.  I even got my dual NIC to bond and work as one connection with my new managed switch.  I used portainer and installed PLEX as a docker container and works.  It seems it is easier to run and update PLEX.  I was sold.  The permissions on the shares and accounts was relatively easier.  I am glad I made the switch.  It is running Linux compared to Truenas BSD system.  I enjoy the GUI and is very simplistic.  I plan on adding a dedicated drive to make a container using LanCache and have my games on tap when ever I delete or update games off my gaming pc.  Stay tuned.
