Guitar Tab Software

When learning and practicing new guitar songs I use a computer for my sheet music.  I do print them up and practice offline.  The reason I practice on the computer? I can hook up my electric and record myself.  From previous jobs, I noticed when you record yourself and play it back.  You actually improve in a shorter amount of time.  On the software I can add the different amps, sound effects and have fun overall.  You get a rush when you can actually play along with your favorite artist.  It is the upgraded version of Guitar Hero.  I never got the idea of playing Guitar Hero when you can actually learn how to play not memorize keystrokes.  Southpark had the best reaction to this.

The software I use or have used.  Both do the same basic job of showing the sheet music or tabs to play with.

  • TuxGuitar – Opensource and is compatible with GuitarPro tabs.  It is very basic and does the job of showing you the tabs to play with. This has more of a basic GUI but still very usable non the less.
  • GuitarPro – Paid version has its own file format.  Has a lot of sound banks, amps and effects.  Play along or connect and really play along.  The GUI seems a lot more polished.
