NAS Server Project
I had decided to re-purpose my old desktop hardware to a dedicated Server. I needed to purchase a server case with rails to sit in my new Rack. I wanted the server to have front loading hot-swapping features. The price at the time was reasonable and could see myself expanding more or little. For the operating system to run this beast, I went with Freenas. I had tested other Operating Systems. The layouts, features, and the learning curve were too over the top or had too little to offer. Freenas has the the support from a great community along with support with built-in add-ons. One of the many features was PLEX and EMBY that had caught my attention.
Since the processor is a XEON CPU it has no built-in display features. Needing to purchase an NVIDIA 710GT. It was a fan-less video card and great to display on my VGA KVM. Attaching the SSD 32GB to an add-on card. Thus reducing the need to use a SATA Port. Yes, 32GB was more than enough space to run Freenas. Freenas OS was originally running from this server using a spare USB Flash Drive. In addition to adding a SATA Card to accommodate the last few drives on this server since the Motherboard ran out. Finally, I attached it to the rack. I had decided to put this heavier server on top first. I can pop the top and work on the server when need arises. Runs fairly quite overall. In another post I will disclose how I have my Freenas system running and my review.
