WOL – Wake on Lan

Estimated read time 2 min read

I finally got around to working on this project.  I always wanted a way to turn on my servers without pressing the button in case I am out of the “Batcave”.  More to score some bonus Techie Points.  I found a few articles and it was easy.

  • Make sure the computers are wired
  • enable on the BIOS/UEFI to Wake on Lan
  • Download app and configured it with MAC Address of the computers
    • In case you have a workstation that has a USB Wireless Adapter, may not work. But if it is hooked up to a Wireless bridge it may work that way.
  • Then Test

Conclusion: I found that my Servers turn on without any issues via network.  My desktop Windows PC works fine as well.  The mac mini does not nor does my computers that use USB Wireless adapters.  The Mac Mini has Wake on LAN enabled but on the switch I noticed there is no light after shutdown.  After research with Mac it is a 50/50 that it works.  I am considering installing another router and modify it to a wireless bridge mode and maybe the Home Theater PC can be turned on for maintenance.
