Home Network – Part 7 Freenas
Long time ago. I was upgrading my desktop computer and I decided at the time to re-purpose my old hardware. After doing some research I found that others would setup their old desktop hardware as Network Attached Storage (NAS). I decided it was it was time to try my hand at integrating a NAS onto my home network. More importantly to gain more knowledge.
I tried and tested other software such as Open Media Vault, Ubuntu Server & Desktop, Windows 10 desktop, and a few more.
1. Open Media Vault – Any changes to the system were permanent. Changing or undoing any setting resulted in issues and ultimately reformat and reset. I loved the idea on paper not on actual practice. Going by what I used at the time.
2. Ubuntu Server with GUI & Desktop – I had a lot of overhead with GUI, resources and had to dedicate more space for the Operating System
3. Windows 10 Pro – Tried of just doing shares and calling it a day.
I chose Freenas. It has the support, plugins, updates, and importantly it just worked out of the box. It had SMB protocol and PLEX all in one. I installed a 32gb SSD onto a PCI slot and kept the rest of the storage separate. At the time of the video I was rocking the 11.1U but upgraded to 11.2 and the GUI seems to be a lot better. Been happy, rock solid, no issues software related. I absolutely recommend Freenas to any tech enthusiast or hobbyist out there to learn about NAS systems.
