RPi – Phase One
My Raspberry Pies came in. I had ordered 2 units to start the population of the rack servers. I ordered one 4gb model with 64gb of storage and the other is a 8gb model with 250Gb of storage. I ordered 2 Raspberry Pi POE Hats. The POE Hats provide two important things to my raspberry pies. Power from my upgrade network switch, so there is no need to purchase additional power bricks. The latter reason is cooling. The fans are very silent and hardly notice them along with the new upgraded switch. I am pleasantly surprised how quite the systems are compared to running a Dell R710 rack server. The Dell R710 sounded like a jet engine taking off when powering on and drown out other noises when it was warm. When it was a cold day in winter, the server would warm up the room. I hardly feel any difference in room temperature.
One the 8GB Model. I setup Nextcloudpi. I have configured it with SSL and can access it both inside and outside my home. I have my own opensource Cloud that I own my data and maintain. I have unlimited space to upload my cell phone pics, calendar, contacts, video chat, and note app. For free.
The 4gb Pi model I have configured it to use Pi-hole. Pi-hole is a network wide ad blocking protection. I get to see less ads on my devices. There are more plans for further expansion. I will detail the results of my tinkering on later posts. Stay tuned.
